Monthly Picks - August 2023

Meredith Marsone - Guest Curator August 2023

Each month we ask one of our artists or collaborators to select and share two works from the gallery that they connect with and why they would like to add them to their personal collection.

Meredith Marsone is a full time artist based in Foxton, New Zealand with a global following. Her portraits merge realism and abstract to create emotive works ranging from hauntingly beautiful to deeply thought provoking. Her work is part of a new international movement of painting termed ‘disrupted realism’.

The Bird Boy Who Dreamt of Crocodiles by Christopher Wright

The Bird Boy Who Dreamt of Crocodiles by Christopher Wright

This sculpture by Christopher Wright has all the right notes of whimsy and imagination. The boy dreams of riding a crocodile with such vividness that there he is, on the back of one! And he sits so confidently on such a dangerous animal. I adore his calm expression, almost a meditation on tackling the difficult things in life.

Tomorrow Is Another Day by Joon-Hee Park

Tomorrow Is Another Day by Joon-Hee Park

I’m a big fan of June-Hee Park’s paintings. The layers of visual delight are second only to the layers of meaning. They ask a quiet reflection of the collection of imagery than one senses is deeply personal to the artist. Her paintings are a gentle offering of the artists internal world which is not only brave on her part but an honour for the viewer to be welcomed and encouraged so openly.
