Artist Statement:
I was always fascinated by moths, and mythology that surrounds them. Their tireless search for the light in dark places - isn’t it an allegory for humanity?
In my childhood night terrors moths were comforting presence, witnessing my every fear, standing in silent vigil, sentinels in the ocean of nightmares.
With my art I try to bring the same feeling of being sheltered by understanding and protecting presence, like a small glimpse of light in complete darkness. My art isn’t dark, it’s the way out of the shadows.

My name is Larysa Bernhardt and I’m a textile artist.
Originally Ukrainian, I’ve been living in rural Midwest of the United States for over twenty years.
The textile sculptures I create are shy creatures, naive and nostalgic. They’re night dwellers and story tellers; silent companions for daytime dreamers and late night readers.
