Originally from the UK, Nicholas Eggleston moved to New Zealand in 2006. Settling in Tauranga, Nick works as an art tutor, paints, makes shoes and pottery all while drinking copious amounts of tea.

While Nick’s artistic journey started in ceramics (graduating from Chesterfield College of Art and Design in 1981 with a distinction in Ceramics) Nick is best knownfor his anthropomorphic paintings. Particularly his tattoo’ed dogs which lend themselves to humour and anthropomorphising due to their close link to humans.

Working mostly in watercolour, Nicholas has recently added acrylic inks to the mix for added vibrancy:

“My love of watercolour, as a medium, is very similar to my love of working with ceramics. There’s an unpredictability to both. You can’t fully control what happens at every stage so you learn to work in partnership.
There’s an alchemy involved with what happens when paint hits wet paper. Like watching fireworks! You can’t force it. You can only work with what it gives you.”
