Quirky Fox: Art + Framing

Sarah Luttrell (married name Warren) was born in 1971 in the South Wairarapa and grew up on a sheep and beef farm in Western Lake, Featherston.

Sarah has always had a love for animals and nature.

From an early age, Sarah loved to draw and was always in awe of her grandmother who was a graduate of Ilam art school and specialized in painting native New Zealand birds in miniature. Sarah’s greatest inspiration was however Raymond Harris Ching whose book she stumbled across while picking out her form two leavers prize at the local book shop. Raymond Ching’s work was the start of a passion for realism, not only to capture a subject but to bring the subject and its character to life. Sarah was fascinated by the meticulous detail in Ching’s paintings.

After achieving first in art in the sixth form, Sarah had to make the decision to either continue for another year at college before studying a fine arts degree with limited career options or follow another dream which was to be a manufacturing Jeweller.

Sarah left school at the end of the sixth form to complete a four-year apprenticeship as a manufacturing jeweller in Lower Hutt with Sherrington Jewellers. After completing her apprenticeship Sarah moved to Palmerston North to work at Cameron Jewellery which was a wonderful experience handcrafting unique one-off pieces in silver and gold. Following this Sarah headed overseas on her big OE, always with a goal in mind of starting up her own business upon returning home.

In 1997 Sarah opened a Manufacturing Jewellery workshop and Gallery in Martinborough which she displayed her original watercolour paintings and hand-crafted jewellery for sale. It was not long before the jewellery side of the business took over with clients from around New Zealand and overseas wanting specialty one-off designed pieces. This allowed Sarah to continue her creative side but unfortunately, painting was left on the back burner for the next 20 years.

With the support of her husband, son and Family Sarah started painting again in 1998. She loves to paint native birds but also has a great fondness for painting the House sparrow. Often thought of as a pest, but one of the most known birds around the world. Sarah loves to capture the sparrow’s personality and cheeky, somewhat bossy character. Although at first glance the sparrow is rather dull in appearance in closer detail it is a beautiful bird with its vibrant chestnut and grey tones, not to mention the male with its distinctive black bib.

In 2021 Sarah has made a move away from watercolours and is exploring acrylic on canvas. This is an exciting learning curve and a way to paint on a much larger scale. Sarah’s continuing ambition is to bring her subject to life, with the finest of detail in a way that a photo cannot portray.
